Sherwood FC 2 - 2 Bestwood Park Rangers

Neil Boot’s contract looks safe for the season now following a sterling Sherwood performance against top of the league Bestwood. It’s a good sign for management when there are 3 injured players who turn up desperate to play (Kayne, Callum and Charlie) and all manage to make a significant contribution.

The first half was end to end football with both keepers busy. Jack put in a superb performance on the left wing and had three shots on goal.  Kel took a penalty that bounced off the crossbar.  About 20-25 minutes in Bestwood went 1-0 up but Sherwood kept up the pressure to ensure there were no further concessions at the half-time whistle.

The second half started with Sherwood struggling. We got an indirect free kick inside the penalty box following a defensive error by Bestwood but didn’t manage to convert this to a goal. Shortly afterwards Bestwood got their second goal and may have thought that the floodgates were about to open. But they didn’t – the Sherwood ark kept well afloat.  Instead, the pace picked up.  The defence were busy but strong. Thomas and Patrick were doing what they do best while Michael, Ryan and Ethan were holding the line.  Down the other end, Bradley had a good shot on goal. It was also Bradley who took the long range free kick that the Bestwood keeper dropped and Tyler ran in (to the rapturous applause of the MaDs).

With two minutes to go, Sherwood dug in and decided that they wanted a point.  It was an attack. The ball came out to Bradley on the left side of the penalty box. He took a long range shot and in it went. Goaaalllll……….

The team debriefing was short and sweet. Fantastic effort everyone. Patrick and Bradley were the nominees for Man of the Match - a very positive combination of the old guard and the new blood.

And happy birthday to Luke – that got the day off to a good start!
