Sherwood FC 8 – 3 Bingham Town

Sherwood had their best ever start to the season this morning with a solid win over Bingham Town. The new boys in the squad certainly made their mark. We didn’t know what to make of Bingham as they have only just joined the YEL from the Newark league. They put up a strong opposition in the first half but the lack of subs showed in the second. Particularly notable were their giant No.3 and their goalie that made several great saves.

Captain Jack’s team were first on the scoreboard after about 10 minutes with a cracking goal, but Bingham soon equalised and then pushed ahead with a second goal after some good runs and near misses from Ryan and Nico. Our defence lost concentration for the middle part of the half with Neil resorting to some fierce directing to sort out sloppy positioning and marking. It was lucky for us that a goal-mouth fumble led to an own goal for Bingham and a half-time score of 2-2.

The half-time team talk and vitamin C boost seemed to do the trick with Tyler, Nico, Jack and Luke all having near misses or setting up excellent chances for their team-mates. Luke assisted with the third goal. The fourth and fifth goals went in with a magical display of pace and nifty headers. Nico then gave us what Ep declared to be the goal of the match (number 6) with a superb overhead kick.

The second half didn’t go all Sherwood’s way. Patrick made a couple of good saves and was ably assisted by Jordan who gave a good performance in defence. The scoreline went to 7-2 with our tally being pushed to 8 with an assist from Patrick. Bingham dug their heels in to get their third goal and the final goal of the match.

Excellent work everyone. Good passing, brave tackles, innumerable shots just off target, effective teamwork. A great start to the season.
