Sherwood 4 – 2 Edwalton Cavaliers

We won, we won, we won, we won……….we won, we won!!!!

Whether it was the Christmas Break, the rained off match or the frozen off match, it just seemed ages since Sherwood had had a good Saturday morning. Even today did not start well with a double-booking of the pitch delaying our start until 11.30. But we were well warmed up and perhaps it made the difference. Neil and Ep added in a team talk on tactical positioning and the lads put it into action on the field.

With a full squad to choose from, Neil put Oscar and Jamie in defence in support of Patrick in goal, with Kieran, Alfie, Jordan and Nico up front. Both teams got off to a good start. The muddy pitch induced lots of slipping and sliding and the odd ball hurtled past back-stop Wayne into the road – one shot hitting a passing cyclist! By half-time Edwalton had put two past our defence but Alfie had reclaimed one setting us up nicely for a traditional Sherwood second half fight-back.

In the second half Thomas and Leon took over in defence with Aadam, Kellum and Mac coming on to join Kieran. Either the chocolate brownies, the team talk, or the sun coming out added another level of energy to the team and the lads surged into action with some fantastic passing and co-operative play. Captain Thomas was shouting instructions, Mac was setting up shots for his colleagues left, right and centre, and Aadam was solar-powered! There were so many near-misses down the Edwalton end we were almost camped in their penalty box! Patrick could have had a doze! Kellum powered home our second, Aadam finally put home our third, and Kieran made it a decisive 4-2 victory.

Well done lads. We needed a match like this to raise our spirits. Excellent teamwork both in defence and attack – and what a sign of Sherwood’s growing skill that all four goals were scored by different players. Keep up the good work.
