Holy Spirit Celtic 7 – Sherwood 2

On a cold and muddy Saturday, Sherwood met Holy Spirit Celtic for their first game of the New Year. Expectations were high for this game due to the good results Sherwood had against Holy Spirit Celtic in pre-season friendlies.

Sherwood started positively but it soon became clear they needed the training sessions they had missed due to bad weather. The team tried hard but mistakes crept into their game and Holy Spirit Celtic were able to score the opening goal.

Sherwood battled on and with some good defending and a great pass from Jordan, Kel was able to equalise fairly quickly.

Thomas and Leon played well in defence and managed to keep the Holy Spirit Celtic shots out of the goal.  Kel’s second goal came from a great ball from Nico and Sherwood were 2-1 ahead. Unfortunately Sherwood were not able to keep the lead for long and Holy Spirit soon equalised. There was some great link-up play between Jack and Kel which led to Kel having a shot on target but unfortunately it was saved by the goalkeeper.

Sherwood started the second half well and were challenging the Holy Spirit goal early on but unfortunately were not able to score any more goals despite efforts by Kel, Finn and Alfie Mac.

The team became tired towards the middle of the second half and mistakes began to happen which led to the final result, including a penalty to Holy Spirit Celtic. Leon made a great goal line clearance in the second half and his great performance during the match earned him man of the match for this week.

Let’s hope the bad weather is over and the team can get back to training on Tuesday. Although the result was not what we hoped the team should not feel too disappointed about their performance and build on it for the next game.

Gate: 30

Man of the match: Leon
