Sherwood 3 – 0 Holy Spirit Celtic Green
Sherwood were lucky this morning. Holy Spirit Celtic Green are a much improved team and this was a very evenly matched game. The first half was a scrappy affair with lots of energy and determination but a lack of the strategic skills that saw Sherwood secure their last victory over Edwalton. Oscar and Mac were tigers in defence and Leon, pushed up front by Neil, showed real grit and energy, hurtling from end to end of the pitch. We had our chances with Alfie and Jordan having several near misses.
The half-time score was nil-nil. The second half saw Kieran, Nico, Aadam and Kellum in action. Holy Spirit opened the attack but were held at bay by a vocal Thomas and Patrick organising the defence in the box. Then Sherwood started to find their pace. With Mac moved up front to help in setting up chances, Nico, Kellum and Kieran built up the pressure on the Holy Spirit Goalie. Then came the breakthrough. With about 5 minutes left to the full-time whistle Kellum put Sherwood 1 goal ahead and suddenly the atmosphere became electric. With the honour of the Haydn contingent at stake (Mac and Kellum’s teacher, Miss Chambers, was there as a Holy Spirit parent), Sherwood dug in their heels and surged forward. Kellum added a second. Still Sherwood kept on and moments later the hat-trick and a victory were secured. Bad luck Holy Spirit – you didn’t deserve to lose this one. It seemed to come down to which team lost concentration first.
Well done to Kellum for his hat-trick, and well done to Patrick for keeping a clean sheet.
