Sherwood FC 3 – 0 Pegasus Youth Warriors

Sherwood are doing their best to show every opposing team their true mettle as we reach the end of the season – comfortable wins early on do not mean a further 3 points in the bag. Quite the contrary as Pegasus found today.

It was a foggy start to the day as Captain Jack led out his squad against a team who had beaten us 4-1 in November. Ben took up position as right back in his first match, while Patrick, Exo and Nico formed a formidable threesome on the sub’s bench - a sign of the quality now available to Manager Neil.

Tyler got the scoring underway just a few minutes in with a volley from the edge of the box that looped over the keeper’s head. He also got the second, a wonderful header from a Kel corner. Pundit Ep thinks that this may be the only headed goal Sherwood have managed. The third goal was a ‘Kel goal’, tucked behind the valiant Pegasus goalie. And then it was half-time.

The second half saw Thomas ‘Fernando Torres’ Furness playing up front to mark his coming of age (13). But despite several chances, the second half saw no further goals from either side. Both keepers were kept on their toes as there were a few corners to each team, but there was only one really dramatic save – a bravura clearance run from Nico covering for Patrick who’d had the ball kicked out from his grasp.

Although the match wasn’t as exciting as last week’s against Bingham Blue, nonetheless, Sherwood played consistently well and looked in command for the majority of the game (despite some of our players being dwarfed by the ‘Warriors’).

It was a good first match from Ben, showing himself to be a brave tackler. He made some useful passed down the right-hand side. Ryan had the best chance in the second half when he hit the crossbar after coming on to cover for an injured Jordan. Luke provided a safe pair of feet on the left-hand side, working with the rest of the defence to send the ball back down the field.

Great work everyone. Don’t get complaisant – there’s still one match to go so let’s hope we can end the season on a high.

Man of the Match:  Nico, for fantastic defence overall and that one save in particular.
