Radcliffe Olympic 13 – 2 Sherwood FC
A crisp and bright morning ended on a rather sour note this Saturday. We knew Radcliffe would be tough – four wins out of four played and a team based at a specialist sports school with fantastic facilities. But this was in part our undoing. Whatever the reason, the Radcliffe boys were wearing studded boots while Sherwood duly turned out in trainers or astro-turf boots for a match on a rubber crumb pitch. The result was a drastic difference in pace and grip, all to the advantage of Radcliffe. But Sherwood gave it their best. The first half saw a cracking short-range goal from Jordan and the second another goal from Alfie. The defence worked hard throughout the match – Leon and Mac in the first half, Thomas and Oscar in the second. Patrick saved innumerable goals and there were many near misses down the Radcliffe end courtesy of Aadam, Kieran, Kellum, Nico and Mac (a particularly dramatic one that just hit the crossbar). The final score was a disappointing 13-2 defeat. If the footwear had been different, it may have been a rather closer result.
Our Radcliffe encounter will be remembered for footwear and the Furness family – Captain Thomas being painfully studded by an opposition player and team nutritionist Wayne providing yummy cake at half-time!
